Fernando Gago is a defensive midfielder for Boca Juniors. He was born on 10 April 1986 in Ciudadela, Argentina.
Gago’s youth career began in 1996, when he underwent trials at Boca Juniors FC for the first time in his life. He was accepted to the club’s youth team and started his football career combining trainings and performing in the youth championships.
In 2004 Fernando finished his studies at the football academy and moved to his first professional team in Boca Juniors. The following three years turned out to be very successful and efficient. Fernando managed to take part in almost every single match, where he demonstrated high-level of performance and excellent vision of the field, followed the directions of the head coach, which is very important. During three seasons the Argentine midfielder made 79 appearances and netted one goal for Boca Juniors.
In 2007 Fernando attracted attention from the royal Real Madrid and the club decided to sign the defensive midfielder. FC Real Madrid reached an agreement with Boca Juniors for the acquisition of Gago for the fee of €20.4 million. He became one of the main candidates for the regular play in the first team. During the first two and a half seasons Gago was a key player in the team performing in the defensive midfield. By the year 2011 the appearances in the first team had become rare, that is why the club made a decision to send him out on loan.
In the summer of 2011 Fernando moved on loan to AS Roma first team, where he played for one year before moving back to Spain to Valencia. In 2013 he had a loan run with Velez Sarsfield. After that he stayed in Argentina signing a permanent contract with Boca Juniors.
From 2005 through 2009 Fernando was part of the Argentina U20 team and the Argentina U23 squad 24 times. Since 2007 he has played in 35 games for the Argentina national football team.
