Franz Beckenbauer is a football manager from Germany. He is a retired player, born in 1945 in Munich. In 1954 he joined the youth team of SC Munich ‘06 and in 1959 he moved to Bayern Munich youth system. Having graduated from the academy he was promoted to the first team in 1964. In 1964/65 Bayern advanced to Bundesliga and in 1966/67 they claimed the German Cup. The team won the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1967 and in 1968/69 they became league title winners. At that period Beckenbauer was the team’s key player and helped the side to win three consecutive Bundesliga titles since 1972. Between 1973 and 1976 Bayern Munich won three European Cups. He played for the German powerhouse until 1977 and throughout his long stay with the team he made 427 league appearances and scored 60 goals.
In 1977 Franz Beckenbauer moved to the USA, signing contract with New York Cosmos, and spent there three seasons. Between 1980 and 1982 he played for Hamburger SV and helped his side to finish Bundesliga champions in 1981/82.
Beckenbauer was called up to play for the Germany national team since 1965 and retired from international duty in 1977. All in all he earned 103 caps and scored 13 goals. In 1972 he was a part of the team winning UEFA European Championship and 1974 West Germany won FIFA World Cup. He was awarded with Ballon d’Or in 1972 and 1976.
In 1986 he was appointed the head coach of the West German national team and led them to FIFA World Cup victory in 1990. He left managing the national squad and had a four-month period at Marseille in 1993/94 and 1995/96 he had two spells at Bayern Munich and at those periods the team won Bundesliga title and UEFA Cup. Then Beckenbauer became the president of Bayern Munich, then was the vice-president of the DFB, then became chairman of the advisory board at Bayern Munich.
