Gabriel Fernandez Arenas (or simply Gabi) plays as a right defender for Atlético Madrid.
He was brought up and spent the start of his career in Atlético Madrid having played for their second team for 2 years. He made his debut in La Liga in the season 2003/04 but he couldn’t secure a place in the main squad so he went on loan to Getafe. In the new team he played 32 games with 3 goals. After the loan was over he returned to Atlético and played 2 seasons there.
His transfer to Real Zaragoza was held in 2007. The terms of the deal presupposed a 4-year link between the player and the club. At the end of the season 2007/08 Zaragoza was relegated to the Segunda however the player continued his performance for the club. As a result of his hard work Zaragoza took the second place in that division and won promotion back to La Liga.
The season of 2010/11 was especially fruitful as he managed to score 11 times (6 of which from penalties). That fact made the bosses of the ‘Colchoneros’ rethink the previous decision to sell the player so talks were held about Gabriel’s return to his first club.
He signed for Atlético in 2011 on a transfer fee of €3 million. The season was a success for the Spaniard as he earned captainship making 31 appearances and scoring twice.
