Gonzalo is a German-Spanish footballer. He was born in Wuppertal, Germany, and began his career in the local club. Gonzalo’s next stops at youth level were Viktoria Rott and Bayer Wuppertal.
In 1999 he joined the youth team of Bayer 04. At the age of 17, Gonzalo made his first main team appearance and took part in the Champions League. He played 24 matches during the first season, regularly coming on the field in the starting squad. The footballer made 21 appearances in the first half of the 2005/2006 season, but sat firmly on the substitutes’ bench in the second half. In 2006 Castro changed his playing position and became a defender, which helped him to come on the field as a regular. The footballer’s place was unchallenged during four years before the arrival of Daniel Schwaab, who became a rival of Gonzalo and struggled for the position with him. The same year ‘Gonzo’ made his most cinematic achievement by becoming a runner-up in Bundesliga.
Castro was several times offered to join his native Spain team, but it did not work out eventually and he got to ‘The DFB-Eleven’ in 2006. The footballer took part in the 2009 European U-21 Championship and picked up the gold medal with Germany. On 24 March 2007, Castro was called up to the senior squad for the first time and has already made five appearances for it. The footballer has a ‘Gonzo’ nickname.
