Huang Bowen was born in Changsha, China. Bowen started his football career in 2002. He joined the youth squad of Beijing Guoan where he spent two years before making it to the main team.
In 2004 the footballer began his professional career in Beijing Guoan. Huang made his Super League debut on 26 May 2004 and netted his first goal. He was considered to be the youngest and the most promising player of the club. After the debut season Bowen secured a place in the first team and became one of its key players. He made 101 appearances for Beijing Guoan overall and scored 13 goals.
In February 2011 Huang Bowen moved to South Korea to join Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors. On 6 March 2011 he appeared on the football field with his new team, and on 16 March 2011 the footballer kicked his debut goal. In the 2011/2012 campaign he Bowen featured in 29 matches for Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors and scored 3 goals. In July 2012 Huang returned to China and penned a contract with Guangzhou Evergrande. Bowen has already played more than 5 games for this club where he is used as a midfielder.
In 2008 Huang Bowen gained his first cap for the China national football team. The footballer made his debut against Jordan on 25 May 2008. Despite his young age and lack of experience, Bowen was called up to take part in 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification matches. In 2011 the footballer played in AFK Asian Cup qualification games. All in all, Bowen netted twice in 24 matches for the China national team.
