Israeli footballer Itay Shechter is a striker of Hapoel Tel Aviv. His career began in the youth team of Hapoel Haifa, where the footballer lifted the Israeli Youth Cup at the age of 13, in the 1990/2000 season.
He made his début in the Israeli Premier League in the match against F.C. Ashdod, coming on as a substitute. The first goal of the footballer came in the match against Maccabi Netanya. In 2006 he joined the Netanya side club as it was stronger than his previous team Nazareth Illit (which was relegated to Liga Leumit).
After three years in Maccabi, Itay ended his spell in the club with Hapoel Tel Aviv move on a five-year deal on 23 July 2009.
On 18 August 2010, Shechter saw a yellow card after he netted a goal in the match against Red Bull Salzburg and celebrated it by putting on a kippah and praying according to Judaic tradition. The story got blanket coverage by mass media as the gesture was said to be a symbol of Judaism victory over Nazism. Another interesting fact is that the kippah was a present of a cancer patient, who was the footballer’s fan.
On 7 July 2011, Itay transferred to German side 1. FC Kaiserslautern.
On 15 August 2012, the footballer concluded a season long loan deal with English side Swansea City. Upon returning from Britain the Israeli joined Hapoel Tel Aviv.
