Jean Makoun is a Cameroonian midfielder currently playing for Rennes in the French Ligue 1. He was born on 29 May 1983 in Yaoundé, Cameroon.
Jean was formed in the youth ranks of his native clubs such as Cotonsport Garoua, Jeunesse Star, Tonnerre Yaoundé. In 2001, he signed his first professional contract with Lille. Makoun played for the club for six seasons amassing 165 appearances for that period. In the summer 2008, Makoun joined reigning champions Lyon. He got off to a flying start at the club scoring a goal in his debut league game against Toulouse. The Cameroonian midfielder scored another three goals in the next two games. Thanks to his terrific performances he established himself as a midfield fulcrum already during the debut season at the club.
In 2011, Makoun moved to the English Premier League side Aston Villa. However, he was soon sent on loan to the Greek side Olympiacos. He recorded the Greek Superleague title and the Greek Cup together with the team. In 2012, Makoun had a short loan spell with Rennes. Having shown strong performances for the team, he was signed by Rennes on a permanent deal in February 2013 and plays there today.
Jean Makoun is a regular international for Cameroon since 2003. He was part of the squad during the 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2010 African Cup of Nations.
