Karim Haggui was born on 20 January 1984 in Kasserine, Tunisia.
He began playing as a youth for a hometown AS Kasserine in 1998. Afterwards, Karim joined a top-flight club Étoile du Sahel where he was groomed by veterans of the Tunisian football. He established himself as an attacking right back. In 2002, aged 18, Haggui made his Tunisian Championship debut in a 1-0 win over Olympique Béja.
At the age of 21, he moved to France and joined RC Strasbourg where he brought out his full potential as a right back. Soon afterwards, a young footballer picked up an injury and was back to full fitness only to the UEFA Intertoto Cup. In 2006/07 season, he was transferred to the giant Bayer 04 Leverkusen for a superb fee of €2.5 million. During his three-year spell at the Bundesliga club, Haggui featured for the German Cup and even succeeded in scoring a goal in the 2007/08 UEFA Cup.
In June 2009, a crafty defender found himself at Hannover 96, baulking at numerous offers from Spanish and English clubs. Despite he found his own goal twice in a shameful 5–3 defeat to Borussia Mönchengladbach on 12 December 2009, he extended his contract with the Reds until June 2014. However, in 2013 the Tunisian siwtched for Stuttgart.
A highly promising Tunisian international, Karim Haggui scored 6 goals in 76 appearances for the national team.
