Marcel Schmelzer is a left back for Borussia Dortmund and the extended German squad. He was born in Magdeburg, Germany.
Marcel began his football career at the hometown clubs Fortuna Magdeburg and then FC Magdeburg. When 17, Schmelzer caught the eye of Borussia Dortmund scouts and was invited to the youth team.
In 2008 the defender signed a professional contract with The Black Yellows. Marcel’s first Bundesliga appearance fell on 16 August 2008 in a 3-2 victory over Bayer Leverkusen, as he substituted Dedê in the 78th minute.
During the first season with Borussia Dortmund Schmelzer took part only in 12 matches, but the next season he secured a spot in the starting lineup with 28 appearances.
The left back has received calls-up both from the U-21 and senior national teams. Being part of the German U-21 team, Marcel won the European U-21 Football Championship.
