When 6, Martin Stranzl began playing football at SV Güssing. At the age of 17 the footballer came on trial to 1860 Munich and was offered a professional contract. Martin made his first line-up start on 1 May 1999 in the match versus Hansa Rostock. Next year the footballer secured a permanent spot in the roster and spent 5 more seasons at the club.
In 2004 Stranzl signed a 4-year contract with VfB Stuttgart. He spent 2 seasons at the club as a right back, despite the fact that he preferred the centre spot. At the beginning of 2006 Russian side Spartak Moscow reached an agreement with VfB Stuttgart, for the acquisition of Stranzl.
At the end of December 2010 Martin transferred to Borussia Mönchengladbach, signing a contract until 2013. The management of the club paid a fee of €800.000 to Spartak. On 23 January 2011 the defender netted his debut goal in the second match for the club.
