Mehmet Ekici was born on 25 March 1990 in Munich, in the family of Turkish emigrants. Ekici began his career entering the local SpVgg Unterhaching youth academy, before moving to Bayern Munich in 1997. The footballer had spent 10 years training in the youth system until was named in the reserve team of the Reds. From 2008 to 2010 he managed to net 18 goals in 70 games for the second squad.
Mehmet’s debut fell on 20 March 2008 in the DFL-Supercup match against SV Elversberg. Later he debuted in the UEFA Super Cup, coming on as a substitute in the 71st minute. During the year 2008 Ekici managed to appear in 32 of 38 team’s games, which let him get a promotion to the Bayern Munich main squad. Although, not having made a single appearance during the season, the footballer was loaned to FC Nuremberg.
Mehmet was a regular league player throughout the 2010/11 season, scoring 3 goals for the new club. On his return to Bayern Munich, Ekici didn’t manage to secure a permanent spot in the roster and transferred to Werder Bremen for €5 million, signing a contract until 2015. Mehmet had some difficulties in becoming a regular. Nevertheless, so far he has appeared in 21 games with the club, scoring his first goal against his former club Nuremberg.
The footballer represented Germany at all youth levels, starting from the U-17 team. However, since 2010 he is a part of the Turkey senior team.
