Nikolai Zhilyayev was born on March 5, 1987 in Nizhny Novgorod, the Soviet Union.
Nikolai passed through the youth systems of FC Titan Moscow and FC Lokomotiv Moscow. It was the latter club which the young striker signed his first professional contract with in 2007. Yet, he did not get a single appearance for the main squad as he was loaned to FC Zvezda Irkutsk to gain experience. Zhilyayev scored 7 goals in 30 games for the temporary club.
In 2008 Nikolai signed for FC Amkar Perm and scored 2 goals in his 2 premier matches for the new club. Yet, the rest of the season appeared to be goalless for the player. In the 2009 season Zhilyayev added only one more goal to his Amkar tally and at the end of the season the Amkar management put Nikolai Zhilyayev on transfer list.
In January 2010, Nikolai signed a three-year agreement with Kuban and was named the vice-captain of the squad. On March 28, he made his debut against FC Avangard Kursk and on April 21, scored his first goal for Kuban. It was the away game against FC Khimki when Nikolai’s opener in the 56th minute turned out to be the winner, thereby securing the second victory for FC Kuban in that season. At the end of the campaign the squad got a promotion to the Russian Premier League. In 2011 Zhilyayev took part in one of the team’s pre-season training camps where suffered a cruciate ligament rupture that kept him from football for several subsequent months.
He did not manage to get back to full fitness and was released from the club in 2012.
In 2008 Nikolay Zhilyayev was called up to the Russia youth national football team.
