In 2003 the footballer went on a season-long loan to Baltika Kaliningrad and amassed 15 goals in 40 matches. After the end of his spell in the temporary team, he returned to his parent Spartak and was sent on loan again, this time to Khimki.
In 2005 Pogrebnyak wore the colours of Shinnik Yaroslavl for a year.
In 2006 Pavel completed a move to Tom Tomsk for €2 million. His career began to flourish as the striker netted a goal in every second game, which entailed an invitation to the national team and drew the attention of various clubs. After the end of the season, Zenit St. Petersburg offered the footballer and his previous club a contract worth €5 million and the offer was accepted.
Pogrebnyak lifted the Russian Super Cup, the UEFA Cup and the UEFA Super Cup, and became the Russian Premier League champion with his new team. In 2008 ten goals of the striker helped Zenit to proceed to the UEFA Cup finals and he became the top goalscorer of the prestigious tournament. The UEFA Super Cup was won not without Pavel’s help as well, because he fired the winner in the match against Manchester United.
