José Raúl Baena Urdiales is a Spanish football player who performs for RCD Espanyol most often in defensive midfield.
The start of his engagement in football happened in his hometown Torrox for a local team Faro Torrox. Later on he moved to an Andalusian side Málaga from where he was transferred to a football academy of the football club Barcelona. In 2007 Baena joined the Barça’s neighbours RCD Espanyol signing with their reserve team.
His first match for the main squad took place on October 4, 2009 in a La Liga game facing Villarreal where the player came in as a second half substitute joining already a 10-men squad. That game eventually ended in a goalless draw. Quite soon Baena became an essential part of the ‘Pericos’ first team either starting or being a substitute in his second season.
Raúl spent the following season on a top level being a solid starter as he was constantly in favour of Mauricio Pochettino, the head coach of the side. As a result Baena scored his first goal for the Catalan side opening the score in a 3-0 victory over Granada.
