Sébastien Squillaci was born in Toulon, France and began his career in local club of the same name. In 1998 the footballer moved to Monaco. The head coach Claude Puel sent him on loan to Ajaccio, because Sébastien failed to establish himself in the first team and did not manage to play for it in official matches. However, Squillaci became one of the key players in the temporary team and helped the club to get promotion to Ligue 1 in 2001/2002.
After Didier Deschamps was appointed Monaco club manager, Sébastien went back to his parent club. The footballer started to play at the main centre back position in his first full season. That season Monaco picked up the silver medals of Ligue 1 and lifted the Coupe de la Ligue. Squillaci made himself known right after his team made its way through to the UEFA Champions League final (2003/2004). The footballer contributed greatly in the match against Real Madrid, though his club lost 2-4. However, they managed to win 3-1 in the return leg and proceed to the semi-final, where Monaco ran out victorious in the game against Chelsea F.C. The club eventually lost 0-3 to Porto in the final match, where Sébastien made a sub appearance in the 72nd minute of the game.
On 27 August 2010, the footballer signed for English side Arsenal. The French player made his debut for the new team on 11 September in a home 1-4 defeat from Bolton. Sébastien netted his first goal in the Champions League match against Belgrade side Partizan, putting the ball in the back of the net from a wonderful header. ‘The Gunners’ won 3-1.
Squillaci did not show a very good performance during the first part of the season which often led to conceding goals. Later he lost his place in the squad.
Having made only 23 appearances during three seasons Squillaci returned to France and joined Bastia.
