History and achievements
CFR Cluj is a football club in Romania, located in Cluj-Napoca, in the region of Transylvania. It was founded in 1907 and named Kolozsvári Vasutas Sport Club. In 1918 the club’s name was changed to Căile Ferate Române (CRF), after Romanian state railway. Initially the team competed in local championship and in 1911 the team won the Championship of Transylvania, which had been founded by that time. After World War I, when Transylvania became part of Romania, the team’s name was changed to CFR Cluj. In 1918/19 and 1919/20 the team was the winner of the regional league, since then they didn’t won any titles for a long time. In 1930s Cluj was relegated to the Divizia B and then to the Divizia C.
In 1947 CFR Cluj merged with the local club Ferar Cluj and competed in the top flight for two seasons before they relegated. Since then the team hadn’t competed in the Divizia A for twenty years and in 1960 they merged with Rapid Cluj. The newly merged team was named CSM Cluj and in 1964 their name was changed to Clujeana, but in three years they returned to their name CFR Cluj.
In 1969 CFR Cluj won promotion to the Divizia A and the following three seasons they competed in the top flight struggling to avoid relegation. Before the start of the 1972/73 season the club bought Mihai Adam, who has become one of the team’s best players. That season was a success for the team as they were fifth in the league by the end of the season. The following three seasons CFR Cluj struggled to avoid relegation and in 1976 they dropped to the Divizia B. They competed in either second or third divisions till ECOMAX M.G. became the owner of the team in 2002, cash injections helped the club to buy several footballers and the team advanced to the top division afte the 2003/04 season. Before the start of the following campaign several more footballers joined the club and at the end of the inconsistent season the team was eleventh.
In 2005 Cluj competed in the UEFA Intertoto Cup and in their first European tournament they were runners-up. And the 2005/06 season they were fifth in the Divizia A. The following season was marked with the centenary anniversary; several newcomers from Europe joined the club and on 22 July CFR Cluj faced Benfica in a friendly match.
The 2007/08 season was a success, as the team was crowned with their first league title and that season they won the Romanian Cup. The following season they won the domestic cup, in 2009/10 Cluj were the league title and cup holder and in 2011/12 they won their third Liga I title.
