Gangwon FC is a South Korean football club located in Gangwon Province. The side competes in the K League Classic.
Gangwon FC was formed on December 18, 2008 under the auspices of Kim Jin-Sun, the governor of Gangwon Province. In 2009 the club joined the K-League. The first professional match came against Jeju United on March 8, 2009. The team pulled off a surprise 1-0 win. The club began the season in sensational style winning first four games. However, Gangwon FC couldn’t maintain that success and at the end of the 2009 campaign the club found itself in the 13th place.
In 2011 the side began to struggle and finished the season at the bottom of the table. The 2012 season has been the worst campaign to date. Gangwon FC was on the brink of relegation. Fortunately, Baek Jong-Hwan scored a late winner in the league encounter against Seongnam, thus helping his team remain with the senior set-up.
Gangneung Stadium is the club’s stadium which has seating for 22,333 supporters.
