History and achievements
FC Kaiserslautern is a German club founded in 1900 in Kaiserslautern.
The club began to play as a part of the top Westkreis-Liga and claimed their first silverware already in 1909. The 1950s brought the team true glory as they imposed their dominance in the Oberliga Südwest and became the German Champions twice, in the 1950/51 and 1952/53 seasons.
In 1963, Kaiserslautern got its place in a newly formed Bundesliga but had a modest success there since. It took the team almost 30 years to assert themselves once again. It happened in the 1900s when the club welcomed two German Cups and the German Super Cup to their trophy cabinet. In the 1990/91 season, Kaiserslautern claimed its third national league title and made its fourth Bundesliga success in the 1997/98 campaign.
However, the club’s success changed to a downfall in the 2000s. The team mired in the lower half of the table since 2002 until it eventually fell from the competition at the end of the 2005/06 season. They currently compete in the 2. Bundesliga despite recent return to the top flight for two seasons.
Kaiserslautern announced itself to the international football reaching the UEFA Cup semi-final in 1982 and losing to eventual champions IFK Göteborg. The club repeated the feat in 2001. In 1999, the team made a competitive European success climbing up to the UEFA Champions League quarter-final losing 0-6 on aggregate to German heavyweights Bayern Munich.
It’s a tidbit that Kaiserslautern can boast of three glorious outstanding victories in their history. The first one is a spectacular 7-4 win over powerhouse Bayern Munich in October 1973 when the Bavarians led 4-1 after 56 minutes of the game and Kaiserslautern sparked furor making a terrific 7-4 comeback. The second one is a 5-0 thrashing of Spanish titans Real Madrid in March 1982. And for the last, Kaiserslautern overmatched giants Barcelona 3-1 in November 1991.
The team are often nicknamed the Red Devils, like the English stars Manchester United, for their red home colours and rush play. They hold their home matches at the 49,780 seater Fritz-Walter-Stadion.
