Tranmere Rovers is a football club from the town of Birkenhead. The club was established in 1884 under the title Belmont Football Club, while the current name was adopted in 1885.
Tranmere Rovers was a founding member of Division Three North in 1921.
During the 1980s the side was on the brink of qualifying to the Premier League as they reached the promotion play-offs in three consecutive seasons, but did not manage to enter the top flight.
The turning point in the side’s history was acquisition of the club by local businessman Peter Johnson in the 1990s. Under his ownership the team started the most glorious period in its history progressing form the bottom of Division Four to the brink of English football’s top league.
During the season 1999/2000 the club despite facing financial problems climbed to the sixth round of the FA Cup and reached the Football League Cup Final where they lost to Leicester City. Later the side progressed to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup in 2001 and 2004.
The main rivals of the team are Bolton Wanderers and Chester City. The nicknames are the Superwhites and the Rovers.
