Bruce Arena is a former goalkeeper and the legendary American coach who is currently at the helm of Los Angeles Galaxy in MLS. He was born on 21 September 1951 in Brooklyn, the USA.
As a player, Bruce featured for the American Soccer League side Tacoma Tides. It was Tacoma club that introduced Arena to coaching as he became the manager at the University of Puget Sound in 1976. His managerial career really picked up steam in 1996 when Arena was appointed the head coach at D.C. United. He led the club to the MLS Cup victory in the inaugural 1996 season and repeated the feat in 1997. Arena’s achievements earned him his maiden MLS Coach of the Year title in 1997.
Bruce Arena earned his international recognition after he led the United States national team to the CONCACAF Gold Cup trophies in 2002 and 2005. The team recorded the third place in the tournament in 2003. All in all, he was the USA national team supremo for eight years, since 1998 till 2006.
In 2006, Arena took over reins at New York Red Bulls and in 2008 he moved to Los Angeles Galaxy. He had a great 2011 MLS season as the Galaxy won the MLS Western Conference, MLS Supporters’ Shield and MLS Cup that season. Bruce Arena was awarded his third MLS Coach of the Year title, the second earned in 2009.
