Marcello Lippi is an Italian football manager and retired player. Currently he guides Guangzhou Evergrande F.C. Lippi was born in 1948 in Viareggio, Italy, and began his senior playing career in 1969. The major part of it he spent with Sampdoria, had a season-long loan at Savona and retired after two seasons at Pistoiese.
In 1982, he took over as the head coach of Sampdoria youth team and from 1985 till 1989 he guided the teams of lower divisions such as Pontedera, Siena, Pistoiese, Carrarese and in 1989 he became the head coach of the top-flight team Cesena. Then he headed Lucchese and Atalanta. The 1993/94 season he worked with Napoli and helped them with a spot in the UEFA Cup.
From 1994 till 1999 and from 2001 till 2004 he took charge of Juventus FC. Under his guidance the team won five Serie A titles, once they were runner-up, in 1995 they won the Coppa Italiana, twice were runner-up, they won four Supercoppa Italiana. In 1996, Juve won the UEFA Champons League and thrice finished runners-up. In 1996, they won European Supercup and Intercontinental Cup. While working with Juventus, Marcello Lippi had a season-long interval, when he was the manager of FC Internazionale.
In 2004, the Italian tactician left Juve for the Italy national team. There he had two spells: from 2004 to 2006 and from 2008 to 2010. In 2006, Italy won the FIFA World Cup but in 2010 the team’s performance was poor and Lippi left the post.
In May 2012, Marcello Lippi signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with Guangzhou Evergrande, playing in the Chinese Super League. He led the team to the 2012 Chinese Super League title and Chinese FA Cup.
