Murat Yakin is a Swiss-Turkish coach and retired professional defender. He was born on 15 September 1974 in Basel, Switzerland.
Murat started out his professional career with Grasshopper-Club Zürich in 1992 where he played for five years amassing 101 matches. He was the Swiss Super League champion together with the club in two consecutive seasons (1994/95 and 1995/96). In between 1997 and 2001, Yakinplayed for VfB Stuttgart, Fenerbahçe and FC Kaiserslautern. In 2001, he joined Basel and that tenure turned to be the most successful period in his career. Yakin helped the club to win three Swiss Super League titles and two Swiss Cup trophies in 2002 and 2003. Overall, he scored 24 goals in 91 appearances during a five-year stint at the club. Moreover, Yakin was an international for Switzerland amassing 49 appearances since 1994 till 2004.
Murat Yakin embarked on his managerial career Concordia Basel in 2006. In 2007, he was appointed an assistant coach at Grasshopper-Club Zürich. Since 2009 till 2012, Yakin coached the Swiss clubs Thun and Luzern. In October 2012, he took over reins at the giant club Basel from the Swiss Super League and led them to two national titles. In May 2014 Yakin left the club.
In the summer 2014 Yakin was appointed the manager of Spartak Moscow.
