Vincenzo Montella started his playing career in Serie C1 side Empoli in 1990, five seasons later moving to Serie B club Genoa in 1995. After becoming a top-scorer in the League, he was noticed by Sampdoria scouts and signed a three-year contract with the team. In 1999 Montella joined Roma and subsequently became one of the most important players in the team, making 215 appearances and scoring 94 goals (fifth best topscorer of Roma's history).
After retiring from playing in 2009, Montella switched to coaching and signed a three-year contract with Roma youth team. Two years later he was invited to head the senior squad and managed to secure the 6th place on the table.
In the season 2010/2011 the Italian coach led Catania to a mid-table placement.
On 11 June 2012 he was appointed as a manager of Fiorentina.
