The Dominican Republic national team has never made great advances on the international arena. And indeed what can be expected of a team from the Caribbean region with a population of about 10 million people?
The team is controlled by the Dominican Football Federation which was found in 1953. It affiliated to FIFA and CONCACAF in 1959 and 1964 respectively. Estadio Olímpico Félix Sánchez is the team’s home stadium with the capacity of 27000 people.
The squad has never qualified for FIFA World Cup and never featured for any prestigious stage of continental championships.
The team made its international debut in a match against Haiti in 1967 where the Dominicans were thrashed 0-8. The biggest defeat for the squad occurred in October 2008 in a goalless 0-9 defeat to Trinidad & Tobago. However, the team made a splendid breakthrough beating British Virgin Islands 17-0 in October 2010.
Nevertheless, the team enjoys better fortune in the 2012/13 season as it reached 103d position in the FIFA ranking – the feat never accomplished before.
