The Kenya national team represents the country in association football. The Football Kenya Federation which takes control under the team and organizes the Kenyan Premier League is a very young body. It was established as late as in 2011 preceded by Football Kenya Limited. However, the team itself has a long existence and played its first international game against Uganda in 1926. Kenya joined CAF and FIFA in 2012.
Though the team is nicknamed the Harambee Stars, there is little starlight in its performances. The Kenyans play with little effect in Africa and have never set foot to the FIFA World Cup finals. However, they’ve made some relative progress in the Africa Cup of Nations. The squad made its debut in this tournament in 1972. It qualified overall for five times but never proceeded further than Round 1.
The Harambee Stars took their best high-scoring 10-0 win over Zanzibar in 1961. Their biggest breakdown was a 0-13 loss to Ghana in 1965.
Kenya is a feeder country of many renowned footballers who currently play for top European clubs. Among them is Dennis Oliech, the captain and the top scorer of the team, and McDonald Mariga, the first Kenyan footballer to feature for the UEFA Champions League.
