The Turkmenistan national team is the football team representing the country at the international level. It is overseen by the Football Federation of Turkmenistan which was founded in 1992 after the country got its independence from the USSR.
The team made its debut in a match against Kazakhstan in June 1992. It didn’t manage to ever get a toehold in the FIFA World Cup as it never qualified for the finals. The team had only one appearance in the Asian Cup in 2004 but it didn’t pass further than Round 1. Nevertheless, it made some progress in the Asian Games, climbing up to the quarter finals at the utmost, and in the AFC Challenge Cup where the team became a runner-up twice in 2010 and in 2012.
In November 2003, the team set a record beating Afghanistan 11-0 which is for now the highest win for Turkmenistan.
Goçguly Goçgulyýew is by right considered the team’s best player. He wears the captain’s arm band and made a total of 22 appearances for the team. Çariýar Muhadow established himself as the top scorer of the Turkmenistan national squad, netting overall 13 goals.
As of September 2012, the team had 127th position in the FIFA World ranking.
