Alex Rodrigo Dias da Costa – is a central defender, born on 17 June 1982 in Niterói (Brazil).
Alex’s professional career began in 2001 when he signed his first contract with Santos FC. Earlier the defender studied at the club’s academy. Periodically he participated in club matches though not too often. It happened so because of severe competition within Brazilian clubs and the coach had to offer a challenge to all talented players. In 3 years Alex appeared in 57 matches for the club and scored 12 goals.
In 2004 the football player caught the eye of Chelsea scouts who in their turn handed over the information concerning Alex to the club’s management. After a tryout Chelsea FC made a decision to sign a contract with the player. The Brazilian defender played for English club with varied success. Everything depended on the manager in charge of the team at the moment. The peak of Alex’s career fell on Carlo Ancelotti spell. However when Ancelotti stepped down the footballer retreated to Chelsea reserve squad and later was deprived of playing time.
In 2004 Chelsea loaned Alex out to Dutch club PSV where he developed the qualities that are so significant to European football.
Since reunion with Chelsea the defender played for the club until 2012. For the time spent in that club the football player appeared in 87 matches scoring 7 goals.
In 2012 the French club Paris Saint-Germain bought the Brazilian defender for £4.2 million and signed a long-term contract with him. Alex reunited with former Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti who entrusted the defender a place in the major squad.
In 2014 Alex moved to AC Milan.
In 2004 Alex as a Brazil U-23 team player took part in 8 matches and netted 2 goals.
Since 2003 Alex Rodrigo Dias da Costa has had 18 call-ups to the Brazil national football team.
