Marcel Schäfer is a German footballer born on 7 June 1984 in Aschaffenburg.
At the age of 5 he began his football grooming at SV Eintracht Straßbessenbach devoting 7 years to the club. After that he joined SV Viktoria 01 Aschaffenburg section and in 2000 – sports club TSV 1860 München. Initially, Marcel played as a midfielder at 1860 Munich but then his coach Reiner Maurer made him a defender.
At the age of 17 Schäfer had his cruciate ligaments torn and even was about to baulk at football career. Nevertheless, a young footballer managed to back to full fitness and in 2003 made a Bundesliga debut in a match against VfL Bochum subbing in two minutes before the final whistle. It is worthwhile to say that after that short appearance Schäfer hasn’t appeared in a starting line-up for 3 years. Only in 2006 he became a regular in the first team.
In 2007 he had a bite at the cherry to play for VfL Wolfsburg. In his first season with the Wolves he scored 6 goals in 29 appearances. Next year he was the only player of the team who appeared in all games of the 2008/09 season. During the next two seasons he didn’t lose ground and missed only 2 games for the team.
On 13 November 2008 Marcel Schäfer earned his first international cap in a friendly match against England which ended in 1-2 defeat for Germany. Schäfer appeared on the pitch then only for 13 minutes. Overall, he played 8 games at the national level.
