He began his development as a footballer in TSV Legau. In 2003, he joined FC Memmingen and passed five years of his youth career in this club. In 2008, he was enlisted in FC Nürnberg youth team and after 4 seasons in it Markus started his senior career. In September 2010, Mendler made his debut in a friendly. In October he made only one appearance that was successful enough to guarantee him a regular starting spot. Soon he made his debut in DFB-Pokal, coming on as a substitute on the 75th minute. At the beginning of November the forward prolonged his contract with FC Nürnberg till 2014. In the 18th Bundesliga round of the 2010/2011 season he scored his first Bundesliga goal that was then disallowed. Since then he has been a bit-part player having appeared for 13 games for the first squad and 3 for the reserve one.
In the 2010/2011 season, Mendler was capped for the German national youth team.
On November 16, 2010 he made his debut for the U-18 squad and then scored 5 in 7 games and in the fashion became the top-scorer of the squad. At the end of the season he was named one of the best footballers of the season. In 2011 Mendler was called up for the U-19 national team and has already scored 3 in 9 matches.
