Olcay was born in Düsseldorf, West Germany. He became addicted to football in his childhood and was playing for youth clubs till 2005.
Şahan started his professional career in Borussia in 2006, where he scored 16 goals in 75 appearances. Later the player represented Duisburg FC from 2008 to 2011, hitting the net 23 times in 84 games.
2011/2012 season Olcay spent in a shirt of FC Kaiserslautern, where he debuted on June 30, 2011 in the German Cup fixture against Berliner FC Dynamo. He represented Kaiserslautern for 30 games, scoring just once on December 11, 2011 in the game against his home club Borussia. Later on June 20, 2012 Şahan signed 4-year contract with Beşiktaş J.K.
Olcay has been called up to the Turkey national football team on February 29, 2012, when the Turkish side experienced the lethargic defeat at the hands of Slovakia 1-2.
