Patrick Helmes began his youth career at TuS Alchen, being always on the move after that. Thus, he got to SpVgg Bürbach in 1991, joined Sportfreunde Siegen in 1992 and FC Köln in 1997. The last step to a professional football was his striking roots in Sportfreunde Siegen where Patrick played until 2005 and scored 22 goals in 51 senior club appearances. Such impressive results caught the interest of FC Köln in Helmes and soon the German club made an acquisition of a young hopeful. Playing for FC Köln, Patrick established himself as a good striker, having scored 4 goals in 7 games. Thanks to his good performances he was admitted to the first team, where he shortly became a top scorer with 35 goals in 65 appearances for 2005-2008 seasons.
Patrick’s achievements could not but spark interest of top-clubs in him. Thus, he enjoyed a meteoric rise by moving to Bayer Leverkusen where he scored in every other game for the club. Having spent three phenomenal seasons at Bayer, a promising young footballer was signed by Vfl Wolfsburg in 2011. Helmes got off to a flying start at Wolfsburg scoring a goal for reserve squad; thereafter he was immediately admitted to starting eleven. He confirmed his stable play scoring 13 goals in 24 games of the 2011/12 season.
In 2013 Helmes completed a switch for Koln.
Playing for the Germany national U-21 football team in the 2005/06 season he managed to break into the Germany national football team. But for the last five years he scored only 2 goals in 13 appearances, which would hardly give him a chance to get a call-up in the nearest future.
