Olivera’s career started in 2001 when he penned his first professional contract with Danubio. His debut season was really tremendous as Ruben managed to amass 21 goals in 37 matches. In January 2008 he returned in Uruguay and made 14 appearances firing 5 goals for Penarol. In 2007/08 he was again loaned to Genoa playing in 20 matches and scoring 4 times.
In 2009 the sequence of loans ended and Olivera penned a contract with Penarol. He made 17 appearances for that club in 2009/10. In the summer 2010 the Uruguayan returned to Italy and signed a contract with Lecce where he managed to become an anchor player taking part in 43 matches and scoring 4 times during a season and a half. In January 2012 Olivera put pen to paper of a contract with Fiorentina. In 2013 he was on loan at Genoa. In January 2014 Olivera made a permanent move to Brescia.
