His career began at FC Stern Marienfelde, located in the southern part of West Berlin. In 1994, upon the manager’s initiative, Thorben moved to Hertha Zehlendorf, which played the key role in Marx’s career. In 1998 the footballer managed to get to Hertha BSC youth team. He had spent two years there before moving to professional football. Thorben made 67 appearances for the reserve team and took part in 79 games of the first squad. All in all he scored 20 goals and claimed DFB-Ligapokal title with Hertha BSC two times in a row (2001, 2002).
After disappointing results with only 8 appearances in the 2005/06 season, Thorben had to transfer to Arminia Bielefeld. For three seasons at the club he took part in 77 matches, finding the net two times, and was included in the starting 11. In 2009 Marx joined Borussia Monchengladbach, where he has made 74 appearances so far. In 2011 the contract with the club was extended.
Thorben’s international debut came in 2002 with the Germany U-21 team. He played a total of 14 matches for the squad. In two years Marx opened his account with the senior squad and appeared 3 times on the pitch. But since 2007 he hasn’t received any calls-up to the national team.
