Atalanta is probably one of the most well-known non-metropolitan clubs in Italy. It was founded in 1907 when two local teams merged into one. The team competed in the Italian league for the first time in 1929, yet it was the year of 1937 when the club appeared in the top flight. From 1947 to 1959 Atalanta was competing in Serie A again and even managed to finish 5th in 1948. The only major trophy the team earned was the Coppa Italia in 1963.
The early 1990s and 2000s saw the club balancing between two divisions, although on the international arena Atalanta reached the semifinal of the 1988 Cup Winners’ Cup and the quarter-finals of the 1991 UEFA Cup.
Atalanta was managed by a number of famous coaches such as Cesare Prandelli, Antonio Conte, Marcello Lippi. The team is also renowned for its youth developing policy that opened such football stars as Filippo Inzaghi, Paolo Montero, Alessio Tacchinardi and Christian Vieri.
The Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia is the team’s home stadium that has a capacity of 24,600.
The most famous nicknames of the team are the Goddess and the Orobics.
