History and achievements
Bordeaux was established in 1881 as a sport association, football was introduced to the club only in 1919 and a year later the club particiapated in its first football match. Bordeaux obtained professional status in 1936 and the following season started playing in the second division.
The first cup success came in 1941 when the team defeated SC Fives 2-0. The club earned promotion to the first division in 1949 and turned the first season in the top flight into triumph winning the league. Yet for a decade after the victory Bordeaux did not succeed in the domestic arena playing in the finals of the Coupe de France in 1952 and 1955 but loosing on both occasions.
The next successful spell happened in the 1960s as Bordeaux took the 4th place and reached the finals of the French Cup three times but losing all three ultimate matches to Olympique Lyonnais, Saint-Étienne and Marseille respectively.
The 1980s was the glorious time for the club that under the presidency of Claude Bez finished atop of the League in the season 1983/1983, capturing the title the following season again. In the 1984/1985 campaign Bordeaux reached the semi-finals of the European Cup and that is still the highest achievement of the club in the European competitions. The club finally clinched the Coupe de France in 1986, and a year later Bordeaux made double this way becoming one of the most titled French clubs.
The recent success was the season 2008/2009 as Bordeaux again was crowned the champion of the League 1 gaining 80 points. The team celebrated victories in 24 matches and lost only 6 in the season.
The nicknames of the team are the Girondins, the Navy and White. The statistics claim that 10 per cent of the French people support Bordeaux.
The most famous players to ever come on the pitch in the team’s shirt are Zinedine Zidane, Sylvain Wiltord , Bixente Lizarazu, Yoann Gourcuff and Christophe Dugarry.
The home ground of the team is Stade Chaban Delmas with a capacity of 34,000 seats.
