FC Metalist is a football club from the city of Kharkiv. The team was created in 1925 and for 20 years competed in the lower divisions of the Soviet league, reaching the Soviet top league only in 1960. Metalist spent majority of its life rotating between Division 1 and Division 2, overall playing in the Soviet top league for 10 seasons.
The highest achievements of the team are silver medals of the USSR Cup in 1983 and the 1988 USSR Cup, when the team defeated Torpedo Moscow 2-0 in the final.
The club did not achieve much in the Ukrainian league in the 1990s and even suffered dropping in a class in the season 2002/2003. However Metalist would return to the top tier the following season and when the club was taken over by the Ukrainian businessman Oleksandr Yaroslavsky, it received substantial financial support that helped it to progress in the league. Metalist won bronze medals of the Ukrainian championship five times in a row starting from the season 2006/2007. The club also frequently plays in the Europa League.
The nicknames of the team are the Yellow-Blues and Metal.
The home stadium of the team is Metalist Stadium that was built in 1926 and was renovated before the Euro 2012. The arena can hold up to 38,000 fans.
Throughout its history the team changed several names, including KhPZ (1936–1946), Dzerzhinets (1947–1956), Avangard (1956–1965), Metallist (1965–1991) and FC Metalist (since 1992).
