Sporting de Gijón is a football team that was founded on 1 June 1905.
In 1912 the club was given the Royal patronage of the king Alfonso XIII, subsequently the royal crown was depicted on the team’s crest.
In 1944 Sporting received promotion to the top flight for the first time. The late 1970s and 1980s are considered the most glorious time in the club’s history when the side competed for the league title and the national cup, and also played in the UEFA Cup. The club finished runner-up in the top tier in the season 1979/1978 and progressed to the final of the Copa der Ray in 1981 and 1982 yet lost on both occasions.
Red and white are the official colors of the team and they reflect those of the official flag of Gijón province.
The home ground is 29,ooo seater El Molinón stadium which is the oldest football arena in Spain. The most famous nickname of the team is the Red-and-Whites. The major rival is Real Oviedo.
