AS Varese 1910 is an Italian club founded in 1910 in the city of Varese, currently playing in Italian Serie B.
The club has a long and colourful history. It’s a tidbit that in their early years, a local market place fenced by a rope served as a club’s playground and a nearby restaurant answered for the dressing rooms. For more than 50 years, Varese competed in Italian lower leagues. Their first run into the top flight dates back to the 1964/65 season. The team had a fruitful decade then regularly competing in Serie A until the relegation in 1975. From that time onwards the club’s success turned to a downturn and they never returned to the top flight again.
In the early 2000s Varese experienced dreadful financial hardships and eventually turned bankrupt. In 2004, the team’s former notable player Riccardo Sogliano took control over the team putting it back to the Italian league ladder starting from the sixth tier. In the 2010/11 season, Varese fought back their ticket to Serie B after 25 years of absence.
Despite the difficulties, the team are proud of their former brilliant players like legendary Giuseppe Meazza, Riccardo Sogliano, Giampiero Marini, Pietro Anastasi, Federico Balzaretti and others who graced the club in their time.
The team are often nicknamed the Leopards and wear red and white uniforms. They play their home matches at the 8,213-seater Stadio Franco Ossola.
