A former Turkmenistani footballer Kurban Berdyev was born on 25 August 1952 in Ashgabat, Soviet Union.
Berdyev spent most of his football career playing for Kolhozçy Aşgabat. Later on he featured for FC Kairat, SKA Rostov-on-Don and FC Rostov.
Berdyev embarked on coaching career at FC Khimik Dzhambul. He later was at the helm of such Kazakh clubs as FC Taraz, FC Kairat and FC Caspiy, and a Turkish side Gençlerbirliği SK. He celebrated his first great success coaching Nisa Aşgabat as the club won the Turkmenistan Cup in 1998 and the Turkmenistan League in 1999.
However, Berdyev carved out a name for himself ruling the roost at Rubin Kazan from 2001 to 2013. In 2002, the club broke into the Russian Premier League and finished third there the following year.
Berdyev guided the team to two Russian Premier League titles in 2008 and 2009, the Russian Cup in 2012. In 2009/2010 Champions League season he managed to get a historic win over Barcelona at Camp Nou.
In 2012/2013 Europa League he reached the last 8 stage where lost to Chelsea 5-4 on aggregate.
In December 2013 Kurban Berdyev was released from managerial position by Tatarstan president Rustam Minnikhanov.
