The Brunei national football team was established in 1959 and became a member of FIFA in 1969. Throughout its history Brunei made one appearance in the 1986 World Cup qualifying campaign, they also made one appearance in the Asian Cup qualification in 1976, but in both occasions they were knocked out in the first round. Between December 2008 and May 2011 the Football Association of Brunei Darussalam was suspended because of the government of the country interfered in the affairs of the federation.
The home matches are played at Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium in Berakas. Its capacity is of 30,000.
