History and achievements
The Hungary national football team has more than a century-long history. It was founded in 1902 and since that year it has played in different international tournaments. The team used to be a powerful team in 1950s but later it lost its reputation as a formidable squad. Today the team is ranked 34th in the FIFA World Ranking. It is nicknamed ‘The Magical Magyars’ or’ The Golden Team’. The last one was given in 1950s but after the revolution in Hungary many footballers had to leave the country.
The team has been a regular World Cup participant since 1938. Hungary finished runner-up twice, losing to Italy in the 1938 World Cup and 1954 World Cup, when the team lost to West Germany 3-2.
Hungary made one more successful achievement in 1964 UEFA European Football Championship in Spain, finishing third.
Sandor Egervari is the team’s head coach and Zoltan Gera is the captain. Ferenc Puskas is the top scorer (84) and Jozsef Boszek has played a record number of games for the team (101).
