Barnsley is a professional English football club from South Yorkshire. The team was founded in 1887 by a clergyman Tiverton Preedy under the title Barnsley St. Peter’s.
The first major achievement of the team is the final of the FA Cup in 1910, but the attempt to claim the title was not successful. Two seasons later Barnsley progressed to the ultimate match again and defeated West Bromwich, thus winning the only silverware in their history.
Throughout its history the team played in the first tier just once in the season 1996/1997.Overall Barnsley spent 10 seasons at the fourth tier, 20 seasons at the third one and 76 in the second division (more seasons than any other English side). The team is the first one to win 1000 matches in the second league.
The nicknames of the club are the Tykes and the Reds. The home stadium is Oakwell that can hold up to 23,009.
