Francisco Merida Pérez is a midfielder playing for Hercules.
His career started when he entered the football academy of Barcelona. Fran was an 8-year-old infant signing for Arsenal in 2005. While at Arsenal, he played for their youth and reserve teams. He scored 9 goals in 33 games for the reserves. Then Fran scored in his first official main squad games for Arsenal against Boreham Wood. The footballer took part mostly in the League Cup games such as the one on September 25, 2007 when Merida made his competitive debut. That was a 2-0 victory over Newcastle United and Fran Merida substituted his fellow-teammate on the 91st minute of the game. He worked hard in the training sessions and managed to impress the management of the team and they showed their desire to extend the contract with Fran. Eventually the contract with Arsenal FC was signed on April 3, 2008.
On January 1 it was announced that Fran was going on loan to Real Sociedad. Playing for that club he achieved stunning results: 1 goal and 16 assists in 17 games.
However on return to Arsenal Merida spent most of the games either on the bench or out of the team’s roster. All in all Merida made only 6 appearances for the club and scored only once.
Merida refused to sign a new contract with Arsenal leaving the club on a free transfer to Atlético Madrid. Fran’s career at the Spanish capital wasn’t a success either. He appeared only in 20 games for the team and was sent on loan to Braga for the second part of the season 2011/12. Having played only 132 minutes overall for half a year in Braga he returned to Atlético. Finally he signed for struggling Segunda side Hercules.
