George Best was a football player from Northern Ireland. He was born in 1946 in Belfast. When he was 15 he travelled to Manchester United but didn’t join them at once. Initially he wasn’t allowed to join the youth system because he was Northern Irish and then he began to train. He played for the reserves though by that time he had already made is First Division debut in September 1963. Best proved himself a promising youngster and became the team’s regular.
He played for Manchester United until 1974 and helped them to win the league titles in 1964/65 and 1966/67. In 1965 and 1967 they won Charity Shield, in 1968 Man United was European Cup winner. George Best was named FWA Footballer of the Year in 1967/68 and was awarded with Ballon d’Or in 1968. The team gradually declined and relegated in 1973/74 Best performance worsened. Throughout his stay with the club he made 470 appearances and scored 179 goals. After retirement Best played for many teams in Africa, Scotland, Ireland, the United States, and Australia. Among those teams were Stockport County, Los Angeles Aztecs, Fulham, Fort Lauderdale Strikers, Hibernian, San Jose Earthquakes, and others. He retired in 1984.
He earned 37 caps for the Northern Ireland national team and scored 9 goals. George Best is known as an eminent footballer though he had behavioral problems, skipped matches and trainings, he drank a lot. He died when he was 59 in 2005.
