Hugo Sánchez is a former professional striker born on 11 July 1958 in Mexico City, Mexico.
Hugo began his professional career with Pumas de la UNAM in 1976. It was a perfect start as he claimed Mexican Primera División titles, the 1980 CONCACAF Champions’ Cup and the 1981 Copa Interamericana during a five-year stint with the club. Sánchez pulled off the 1978/79 season as the Mexican League top scorer with 26 goals in 38 matches. Overall, he scored a total of 99 goals 183 in all competitions for Pumas.
In 1981, Sánchez joined Spanish side Atlético Madrid. He had a glorious 1984/85 season as he recorded the Copa del Rey and the Supercopa de España together with the club. In the 1985/86 campaign, the Mexican striker moved to giant Real Madrid and helped them to win five consecutive La Liga titles, the Spanish Cup and three Supercups during a seven-year spell. He also became a five-time La Liga top scorer with both Spanish clubs. All in all, Sánchez scored 207 goals in 283 appearances for Los Blancos. After that he had spells at such clubs as Mexican clubs América, Atlante and Celaya, Spanish Rayo Vallecano, Austrian Linz and American Dallas. In between 1977 and 1994, Sánchez earned 58 caps to the Mexico national team amassing 29 goals for the squad.
In 2000, Hugo Sánchez embarked on his managerial career as a coach of his feeder club UNAM leading them to the Mexican Primera División in 2004. Since 2006 till 2008 he coached Mexico national team. While at the helm of Almería, Sánchez helped them to escape relegation from La Liga in the 2009/10 season. He retired from football after coaching spell at Pachuca in 2012.
