Jay Spearing is a defensive midfielder of Bolton Wanderers. He was born in Wallasey, Wirral Peninsula, Merseyside.
Jay trained in the Liverpool youth academy and at the beginning he tried to play at the position of a right back and centre back, but did not succeed. That might have been due to a low height and nonstandard constitution. However, Spearing showed his skills and talent when the coaching staff decided to put him on the defensive midfielder position. Since that time, the position has become Jay’s favourite one.
The footballer captained Liverpool youth team that lifted the FA Cup in 2007 in a victory over Manchester United. A year before Spearing’s team picked up the same trophy in the match against Manchester City peers, but Jay was absent during major part of the season due to an injury and Steven Darby wore a captain’s band.
In the summer 2007 Jay and several other youth players were promoted to Melwood, so that they could train with the Liverpool reserve team. On 8 August 2008, the footballer was given the number 34 shirt and joined the first team. Later he changed his number to 26.
Jay made his debut for the senior Liverpool team in the last match of the 2008/2009 Champions League group stage against Dutch side PSV.
In 2011/2012 he was let on the field more often due to an injury of main defensive midfielder Lucas Leiva.
Later on Jay had loan spells with Leicester City and Bolton Wanderers. The latter were impressed with the midfielder’s performance and signed him on a 4-year deal in August 2013.
Spearing often gets different nicknames from fans due to his low height and a bit funny face.
