Óscar de Marcos Arana is a Spanish midfielder who plays for Athletic Bilbao.
He started his career at Deportivo Alavés with his first game in the Segunda against Tenerife on December 21, 2008. He spent 20 games for his club but didn’t manage to save it from relegation.
Escaping from lower championships he signed a 4-year deal with Athletic Bilbao. His first start came on August 6, in a 2-1 victory over Young Boys in the UEFA Europa League qualifiers. 10 days later he opened the score against Barcelona in the Super Cup nevertheless the Basque team suffered a 1-2 defeat.
The club was signing Óscar as a reserve team player but he made a huge progress, much bigger than his main rival for a place in the starting eleven Iker Muniain. The player made 29 appearances through the season 2009/10 scoring thrice. Óscar played for the reserves only in May of 2010 helping them escape relegation to the Tercera.
De Marcos was making less and less appearances in the following season still he was frequently engaged in the centre of Athletic’s defence line. He finished that season with only 15 appearances in the official games. Later when the current manager Marcelo Bielsa was appointed de Marcos was again transferred to his favourite position in the centre of midfield.
A harsh scrotum injury in December of 2011 didn’t prevent him from signing a new contract with the Basque side in January of the next year. The terms of a new 4-year deal foresee a €32 million closure amount which shows how much the coach trusts the player.
