History and achievements
Arminia Bielefeld was founded by fourteen local bourgeoise in 1905 as 1. Bielefelder FC Arminia. Several weeks later they played their first official match against a Osnabrück team and were admitted to the German Football Association. The club started to progress quickly and clinched the Westphalian championship in 1913. The World War I interrupted the club formation and they only revived in 1922 by winning the West Germany Championship.
In the 20’s Arminia repeated that success several times. In 1933, Arminia were promoted to the Gauliga Westfalen for the first time and finished runner-up in 1940. The team experienced ups and downs in post-war years but manage to make its way to 1. Bundesliga in 1970 for the first time in the history. However, the club was found to be involved in bribery affairs and was expelled from the top-flight. In 1978 Arminia managed to hit back and return to Bundesliga. They recorded a historic 4-0 victory over powerful Bayern Munich in that season. After floating between the divisions Arminia managed to stay in th etop-flight for five consecutive seasons.
In the 80’s the club from Bielefeld started to experience financial problems that became ongoing through entire club modern history. In 2000’s Arminia came back to Bundesliga and stayed for five straight years. Another financial breakdown saw them relegate to the third Bundesliga. The club managed to get promotion to 2. Bundesliga for the season 2013/2014, but were relegated in the following season.
The club’s colors are black, blue and white. Bielefelder Alm is a home stadium with 27,300 capacity.
