AZ from the city of Alkmaar appeared in 1967 as the clubs Alkmaar ‘54 and FC Zaanstreek merged to form AZ’67. In 1986 the name was transformed to AZ.
The 1970s and early 1980s came down into club’s history as the time of glory, as in 1981 the team’s trophy cabinet welcomed its first silverware in the shape of the Dutch championship trophy. The same season the team reached the UEFA Cup final, yet lost there to Ipswich Town. Few years later the rise changed to a downward spiral when the team was dropped in a class in 1988 and faced financial difficulties.
Only ten years later AZ started recapturing its lost positions, receiving promotion to the Eredivisie. In the season 2004/2005 the club advanced to the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup, finishing third in the Dutch league.
During the 2006/2007 season the team was competing with PSV and Ajax for the championship title, yet lost the last match and finished only 3rd. The same season the team was defeated by Ajax in the KNVB Cup final. Two seasons later AZ showed unprecedented results in the Eredivisie, being undefeatable for 28 matches and finally finishing atop of the Eredivisie, thus claiming the second Dutch championship title in its history. The team’s history also boasts 3 Dutch Cup victories.
The team’s permanent facility AZ Stadion that has a capacity of 17,000 was opened in 2006.
