Groningen is a Dutch football team that was founded on 16 June 1971. The original name of the club was Unitas and it appeared in 1915, but it was not until the team started playing in the league of the Dutch Northern provinces that they received the current name GVAV (Groningen Football and Athletics Association) which in 1971 was reduced to FC Groningen.
The highest ever finish of the team in the Eredivisie happened in 1991 when the Green-Whites reached the third place. During its history Groningen managed to play in the qualification of the UEFA Cup a couple of times, yet did not manage to get to the group stage. In the season 2011/2012 the side achieved moderate success in the top league, finishing the 14th on the table.
The crest of the club was created by one of the club’s fans Reint Rozema in 1971 and it depicts a green later G that refers to the name of the team, resembling in its shape a ball. The official colors of the team are green and white. Groningen is nicknamed the Pride of the North and the Green-White army.
The home arena of Groningen is newly built Euroborg that sits more than 22,000. The stadium was opened in 2005 and currently the average attendance of the home games is 21,000.
